Creatives

Creatives

Launch 200+ creatives daily, kill underperformers by noon, then concentrate budget on the 5-10 winners. This is how you can identify creatives that perform well for months.

"I remember at, like, at Reflectly, we would, like, we would, I would turn on 200 creatives in the morning. By noon, I would see that about, you know, 90% are underperforming, so I'd kill those. And then after lunch break I'd have five to 10 creatives that are doing really well, put all of the budget behind it, go all in, and then you would find, like, one that'll last for months that are performing well."

Sylvain's take:

This is inline with the "eliminate poor performers" approach that I shared in Growth Gems #129 (with Thomas Petit and Eric Seufert):

Darius mentioned they would look everyday at the Facebook Ads library to find yesterday's best performers and immediately recreate the ads.

Creatives

Success in paid UA comes down to creative testing volume and speed-to-market. The first to identify and scale winning creative concepts wins.

"And you Jesus Christ. Sorry. Do I still have the the sound on or no? No, no, it's off. Okay. Good. You before after, right? So that's the like that's the beauty part of the the whole whole app. At the end of the day, this is, like, this is all quite simple. Like it's just about, like, volume of testing on the creatives and and whoever can get there first, like, wins."

Creatives

Use TikTok as a free creative testing platform by posting 100+ videos daily to identify winners before spending ad budget. This pre-qualification approach eliminates wasted ad spend by only scaling creatives that have already proven organic success.

"And if you post like a ton of videos on TikTok, you can post 100 videos a day, you can see which one takes off, and then you don't, you don't waste your advertising budget. You take the two, three that work really well, you scale, you go all in and you pre-qualify your creatives. Exactly. Creative testing. You just do it. You just do it on Tik Tok and, uh, you can literally do it like on a daily basis, like tens of videos if you have them."

Sylvain's take:

This seems like a solid strategy, however it can be quite time-consuming (particularly if you use multiple TikTok accounts) so I feel like it鈥檚 a trade off between time and money: it is faster and more straightforward to just launch ads in creative testing.

Creatives

Most people pay influencers for the distribution, but often just that is not worth it. What鈥檚 interesting with influencers is the creative content that you can run as ads. If you do this enough, you鈥檒l find UGC creatives that really work and often outperform creatives you could create yourself.

Strategy

Strategy

Bending Spoons expects job candidates to do 4-5 unpaid hours of "at-home" work before talking to them, mostly work unrelated to the core expertise and more geared toward problem-solving. They do pay very well for Italy and leverage that.

Inside $500M/Year Bending Spoons: TikTok Trends, Viral videos, UA & Paywall Science at 14:30 路 Featured in Growth Gems #130

Sylvain's take:

They also have a 3-6 month internship program for graduate hires where people choose their role after working a while for the company.

They supposedly have less than 1% "unwanted churn".

Strategy

5 years ago app founders would not get a lot of inbound messages for acquisition. Now, some get frequent messages from companies like Bending Spoons or other private equity firms. It was also easier to revamp onboarding and paywall to significantly improve revenue.

"And now those same people, the same founders, they get messages like every day from Bending Spoons, like people and private equity, and all these. like the, the market has shifted significantly. Demand for apps is huge now."

Sylvain's take:
Strategy

Since they're very confident in their own team, the first move of Bending Spoons when they acquire a company is to fire 75% of people in that team and bring more talent in-house in Italy (where costs are cheaper).

"So when they did some of these big acquisitions, Note that we transfer and a bunch of the other ones, one of the first things they do is fire everybody. That's a big way to lower costs, because these are based in San Francisco and Amsterdam, other places. So you fire everybody and then bring it in-house, and it's still, you still pay really well, but it's cheaper in Italy and Milan than most of the other places."

Strategy

Building apps from scratch might not be the fastest path to high revenue. Bending Spoons first bought an app for $15k, rewrote it, changed the design, and improved revenue metrics. This laid the ground for their growth strategy.

"They then took the profits from this app and made the next purchase, which was larger, and they managed to turn it around for a bigger profit. So this laid the grounds for the Bending Spoons' business model, which focuses on buying assets, overhauling them, and they describe it themselves as a mix between being a technology company and a privy-equity firm."

Sylvain's take:

Bending Spoons' annual revenue across apps has been estimated at $500M and they're eying an IPO.

Below is the evolution of downloads and revenue for their portfolio (source: Sensor Tower). It鈥檚 a little hard to read, sorry. You can see that Splice and Remini have grown a lot recently.

They did raise $340M in September 2022, which they used for acquisitions. StillFront and Embracer have had similar models, where they'd raise the value of their stocks via acquisitions and it apparently didn't go well but subscription apps is a different market.

Strategy

Transferring iOS apps can be difficult due to use of CloudKit or developers being in the Small Business program (paying only 15%). It has prevented deals from happening. One of the first pre-screening questions is whether or not the apps use iCloud or sign-in with Apple.

App Store Optimization

App Store Optimization

Optimize review prompt timing by showing it immediately after subscription completion, before users experience the product. Users are most positive right after subscribing and will rate highly, while the negative-to-positive ratio remains constant but volume increases.

"And they were like, you know what, let's move it. Let's show it right after the paywall after the onboarding before they even see the product because they just subscribed. Like they just want to get in there, so they'll click on whatever. And so that worked and then like the reviews went up like next and the ratio of negative to positive stayed the same."

Sylvain's take:
App Store Optimization

Actively manage your app store reviews by reporting negative reviews that don't comply with guidelines (e.g., complaints about pricing rather than app functionality).

"Well, we can report bad reviews that don't align with some of the guidelines. So, it says the review has to talk about the app specifically or some stuff within the app. I'm trying to report all the ones that just like I have a bunch of bad comments that just say this is not free. So my claim is like this is not about the app. This is just, so shoot down one star reviews this way."

Inside $500M/Year Bending Spoons: TikTok Trends, Viral videos, UA & Paywall Science at 44:32 路 Featured in Growth Gems #130

Sylvain's take:

I know you can do this via your app store contact, but not sure you can do it any other way?

App Store Optimization

Leverage app promotion sites like AppAdvice to make your app temporarily free in exchange for them featuring you. This sacrifices one day of revenue but generates thousands of installs and hundreds of five-star reviews which helps with discoverability.

"So every day they feature a couple of apps and then you make a deal with them. So you make the app free for a day and they'll feature you. And we did it one of our fitness apps. We got 10,000 installs in a day. So, you don't get the revenue because it's free, but we obviously like we forced the revenue prompt down their throat. And so, we got a couple hundred five-star reviews."

Sylvain's take:

Aaah the old AppGratis model (I'm showing my age)!

Before pulling the trigger on this, I would carefully look at (similar) apps that have recently used the service (3-6 months) to better understand what the impact might have been. There might be unintended consequences...

Onboarding and Activation

Onboarding and Activation

Think about the onboarding as a separate product: there is so much value to derive from optimizing the onboarding. You don鈥檛 want to just put together a couple of screens while you over-engineer the rest of the product.

The weekly + annual subscription paywall with free trial toggle template has become the industry standard the last year, and is now available as a default template in tools like Superwall.

"This table has become so popular that now it's a default template on Superwall, for example. Nice. Okay. So, we're actually doing, I need to check. It's a one-click to move all our apps to the same thing."

Sylvain's take:

For the products in his portfolio, Darius is trying to push people to the weekly subscriptions because he's seeing the weekly subscription LTV being higher. Obviously this is something you need to test for your own product.

This is an interesting read by Daphne Tideman on the RevenueCat blog: Weekly subscriptions: when do seven-day plans make sense?

Organic Acquisition

Organic Acquisition

Create and post on multiple TikTok accounts to leverage its unique algorithm and deliver millions of views to brand new accounts, making it the most powerful organic discovery platform for apps.

"The real special thing about TikTok, like the the organic discoverability, is is incredible because the algorithm is fundamentally different from Instagram. On Instagram you can only get exposure to people who follow you most of the time. On TikTok you can have zero followers. It's about the content and if you post it like I've seen accounts with zero followers, first video, 8 million views."

If you're looking for examples, my favorite newsletter is socialgrowthengineers.com.

As Matej mentioned, you can now automate a lot of this process (at least the content production part).

One strategy to build an app portfolio is to monitor TikTok's trending keywords to spot a generic trend, build an app MVP around that keyword in a week and publish on the App Store. Run Apple Search Ads on top of that.

"So some of like our strategy is, I look at these trending keywords couple times a week, and every once in a while, I'll find a trend that's not a specific app, but some generic trend that went viral on TikTok, and then we'll quickly like we'll build an MVP in a week. We'll put it up there, and then on top of it, I'll put search ads to make sure everybody who goes to look for it then like gets the app. You rank number one in like three days, and then if the trend stays, you're, you're good to go and you're golden."
